Programme: Aliens and Nationality Law Amendment
The 2022 amendment to the Aliens and Nationality Law repealed the previous statutory ban on dual citizenship and removed gender discrimination that had prevented Liberian mothers from transmitting citizenship to children born abroad on equal terms with fathers. The Law Library of Congress documents the legal changes, while UNHCR welcomed the gender-equality reform as an important measure against statelessness. The reform retains restrictions on certain elected and senior public offices for dual citizens.
